Following a recent Freedom of Information request submitted to Gwent Police, Local MS Peter Fox, understands there have been 143 road traffic collisions on the A40 that runs through Monmouthshire

In data supplied by Gwent Police, it is noted there have been a significant number of incidents on the A40 that runs in Monmouthshire from the west of Abergavenny to the Wales and England border north of Monmouth. Of these 143 incidents, 15 were noted as causing “death or injury”, with 23 incidents already occurring in Q1 of 2025.

In 2018, the A40 was named as ‘Wales’ most dangerous road’ following an analysis that revealed the road was home to the most accidents in Wales.

There has been a lot of focus in recent years on the accident hotspot at Raglan, with MS, Peter Fox, being highly vocal in calling for a solution to improve safety at the Raglan junction of the A40. He recently attended a public meeting with Raglan Community Council, local representatives, and the public to discuss the matter in detail.

Peter Fox, Member of the Senedd for Monmouth, and Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Infrastructure, Transport & Rural Affairs, has said: “The statistics provided by Gwent Police make for concerning reading.

“I know there are many factors at play with road traffic collisions, but it is worrying to see such a high number on a relatively small stretch of road.

“I have been very vocal in calling for a solution to improve safety at Raglan junction, and whilst these statistics do not solely relate to the junction, some of the numbers provided will be for incidents at that accident hotspot.

“I will not stop raising the Raglan issue with Welsh Government and SWTRA until a solution is found, implemented, and the safety of residents and motorists is secured.”
