COUNCILLORS have called for urgent action to save a town’s post office from closure.
A meeting of Monmouthshire County Council passed a resolution to work towards saving the post office in Caldicot, after Morrisons announced that the McColl’s where it is based will close next month.
Members were told that up to 60 sacks of mail a day are collected at the Newport Road post office, and the need for it would become even greater next month when the town’s last bank – Lloyds – closes.
The McColl’s is one of 132 stores new owners Morrisons are closing after a £190m rescue deal.
Cllr Jackie Strong (Caldicot Cross/Welsh Labour), who proposed the motion to save the post office, said: “Caldicot Post Office is a thriving business, which is heavily used by residents. It is only homeless because of the decision by Morrisons to close McColl’s.
“I am pleased to have gained support across the council in recognising the importance of keeping a main Post Office.
“For many local people, as well as businesses, having access to cash, being able to bank cash deposits and make use of the many services a main post office offers is vital.
“The situation is particularly serious given that Lloyd’s, the only bank remaining in the town, is closing in January.”
