The residents and businesses along Monnow Street are urgently appealing to Monmouthshire County Council to address a severe weed overgrowth issue that is detracting from the street's appearance and causing safety concerns.
The rampant growth of weeds on pavements, in parking areas, and around shop fronts is negatively impacting the community's quality of life and the local economy.
Town and county councillor Jane Lucas said that “over the past few weeks, the unchecked growth of weeds has become a major nuisance. These weeds are potentially creating tripping hazards, and diminishing the overall charm of Monnow Street, a vital commercial and social artery in Monmouth. Local business owners already report a decline in footfall attributing it to the Welsh Water works,” she added..
"Our beautiful high street is being overtaken by weeds, and it's hurting our businesses at an already difficult time.
"Customers are already avoiding the area because of the Welsh Water works and now it looks neglected and unwelcoming. The aesthetic charm of Monnow Street is being impacted and its reputation as a key shopping and tourist destination is also being hit, a further blow to potential income for shops.
“We need the council to step in and help us clean up Monnow Street and establish a regular maintenance schedule to prevent future issues,” she added.
