The season of goodwill is upon us, and as we prepare to celebrate this special time of year, I would like to reflect on the year gone by and I take this opportunity to extend my warmest wishes to everyone in our town.

Christmas means different things to all of us but there are some common themes – it is a time for joy, togetherness, and giving thanks. It’s a chance to celebrate the love we share with family and friends and to remember those who may be less fortunate.

There is no denying that this year has been a particularly challenging and difficult one, especially for our traders with the disruption caused by the wholly necessary replacement of the Town’s drinking water supply pipes. I have been pleased to attend the opening of several new businesses and the relocation of others to larger premises.

For many of us, this will be the first Christmas without a loved one at our table and joining our celebration.

However, I feel my spirits lifted as I enjoyed the magical Christmas Lantern Parade, the joyous music of our many choirs and the magical festive spirit that is so nourishing to witness and be part of.

And it’s at times like this when the privilege of being Mayor really feels at its strongest.

As your Mayor, I am continually inspired by the kindness and generosity of our residents, who come together to support one another. Whether through volunteering, donating to local charities, or simply checking in on a neighbour, these small acts of kindness make a significant difference. Like any year, we are all faced with personal challenges, and we should give thanks to those who have supported us and given us strength.

This sense of community spirit underlines what a truly special town we live in- a town I am proud to represent as your Mayor and call home. No matter what the challenges our community faces, people pull together to overcome adversity.

A way we can help support our town is by visiting the Town’s festive events, where you will not only find unique gifts offered by independent traders, you’ll also help our community thrive by supporting local businesses. From handmade crafts to delicious treats, I’m sure there’s something special waiting for you right around the corner.

I would like to thank all our council staff, for their unwavering commitment and hard work in providing services to the residents of the town throughout the year. I thank my fellow Town Councillors for their support and diligent efforts on behalf of the Town. I would like to say a special word of thanks and pay tribute to our amazing emergency services who will be working hard over the holiday period, and offer help to those who are less fortunate – the sick, the vulnerable and the homeless.

May the peace and joy of Christmas fill your hearts and homes this holiday season; and may 2025 bring hope, happiness and prosperity to you and your loved ones.
