An individually designed textile record, showing the shops on the west side of Church Street was started in July 2006. Using fabrics funded by Rural Community Action Monmouthshire, a small group of embroiderers met weekly taking 900 hours to complete the work in the autumn of 2007. Church Street is one of the town's most attractive assets. Although some of the shop frontages are modern, the street is set firmly on mediaeval footing and many of the shops still show internal evidence of this. The aim of the group was to demonstrate that the architectural heritage of Monmouth is not just about individual buildings but about how the juxta positioning of a mixture of buildings can blend together to form a pleasing and unified whole. Each embroidered interpreted 'her' shop or pair of shops, in her own way and the completed shops were then sewn into place on the eight-foot long brown linen background. Its destiny is as an 'historical document' and will be looked after by the Nelson Museum. Greetings cards of the scene are available from the Museum, 50p from every card will be donated to the Shire Hall Fund, to help the community contribution towards the matchfunding for the renovation work.
