CALDICOT train station may be closing next year. Bridge work will be taking place as part of a main line electfication project but local councillors have voiced concerns that Caldicot will cut off by public transport. The decision to potentially close the train station follows a meeting recently with Georgia Cottrell, station manager for Caldicot, Chepstow Severn Tunnel Junction and Lydney, councillors and rail lobby group Severn Tunnel Action Group. Several stations were discussed at the meeting, including Chepstow, Severn Tunnel Junction, Caldicot and Lydney. Caldicot's signage, flooding in the underpass and litter problems on Network Rail land were named as issues to address. Other worries voiced in the meeting were poor rail connections from Chepstow to Bristol, a lack of car parking spaces and passenger safety. Speaking for Chepstow train station, County Councillors Peter Farley and David Dovey, along with the ticket agent, Tony Pritchett, discussed the possibility of increasing platform seating, additional shelter on the down platform to Cardiff, re-opening disused toilets, and signage for tourists. Commenting on the potential closure of Caldicot station, Councillor Tony Easson, said: "With two council wards containing high levels of benefits claimants, the news this past week that Stagecoach are feeling forced to discontinue operating the Route 74 and X74 buses from Newport via Spytty to Chepstow, is bad news for lower paid workers, those on benefits and the elderly." Colin James, a spokesperson for Severn Tunnel Action Group (STAG), said that the lack of a rail service from Caldicot to Chepstow, Lydney and Gloucester, at key times, makes the situation dire. The Magor lobby group also took Georgia to visit the site where they would like to establish a new station, and to get her opinion on some of their ideas. Announced at the meeting was a new date for the installation of a new disabled access passenger footbridge at the Severn Tunnel Junction, which has been brought forward a year, following a funding boost through the 'Access for All' programme, an initiative dedicated to improving accessibility at train stations nationwide by installing lifts and ramps. At Severn Tunnel Junction, a new footbridge, ticket office and an additional passenger shelter are planned. David Flint, chairman of STAG, said: "We've waited for several years for this new footbridge and ticket office. "Since STAG was formed seven years ago we have fought hard to get the rail services and station facilities improved. "Currently STAG is trying to ensure parking isn't disrupted during the building works for the new infrastructure, and we continue to work with Rogiet Community Council and the County Council on this matter." It is not clear at this point how long the station may be closed for.
