A CALDICOT school pupil has won first prize in a national charity’s Wales-wide photography competition to celebrate the positive aspects of ageing.
Nine-year-old Violet Stones, a pupil at Castle Park Primary School, took top prize in the under-16s category in the Age Positive photography competition.
Violet’s picture of her 82-year-old great nan Marian William having fun in her garden impressed judges in the competition run by Age Cymru.
Violet’s teacher Mrs Sue Wilsher, who entered the photo into the competition as part of a Year Five class project said:
“I’m delighted that Violet’s photo took first prize in the under-16s category of the Age Positive photography competition. The picture is called ‘It’s good to grow older because you can enjoy fun times with family’, and is a nice jolly image of Violet’s great nan, Mrs Williams.
“She’s clearly enjoying herself, having fun with her family and posing for Violet in front of the camera without a care in the world.
“It really stands out for me as an idyllic image of an older person really enjoying life by spending time with her family.”
The Age Positive photography competition was run by Age Cymru to celebrate the positive aspects of ageing and the contribution older people have made and continue to make to our communities.
Sarah Price, Age Cymru’s Age Positive Week coordinator said:
“Well done Violet, congratulations on winning first prize in the under-16s category of our Age Positive photography competition, it was a clear winner.
“Your photograph just stood out; the composition, the bright summer lighting and most importantly, your great nan’s infectious smile.
“Our panel of judges, including professional photographer Michael Iwanowski, unanimously picked your picture as the winning photo in the under-16s category.”
Violet wins a £100 Love2Shop high street shopping card.
