The A40 is closed westbound between B4164 (Whitchurch) and A466 (Monmouth) due to a vehicle fire.

The closure is in place to facilitate the complex recovery of the fuel tanker involved.

West Mercia police are on scene.

Traffic is being diverted via Well Vale Lane which is reportedly coping quite well.

Due to the nature of the incident, the road may need to remain closed for some time yet. The damaged vehicle needs transferring using specialist equipment which is en-route from Swansea, expected to arrive around 9:30am.

Once the vehicle is cleared, teams will assess the condition of the road to see if any repair work is needed.
